I have recently moved to a school that has a mixture of vertical and horizontal register. Having never worked with vertical before I find it very strange that each teacher on the vertical needs to go into two different registers to do am or pm register. One for year 7 and then another for year 8. Is this really the only way to register the students... Is there a way of viewing them all in one register but keep separate group names, ie 8as and 7as. Hoping somebody may be able to assist.

Im not an expert with this, but it should be possible to get them all on one register. My old school had some classes with all 5 year groups and had 1 register.

Vertical groups can't be subdivided - I can't really understand what you are trying to achieve?

It should be relatively straight forward to have a vertical structure. There could be two ways this is done.

Firstly check your pastoral structure from Focus | School | Pastoral Structure

 

When you look at your 'vertical' year group, it should say Year 8 / Year 7. I suspect that this hasn't been done and that you're running a vertical structure in practise but not by the system.

 

You can right click on the tier above to organise the groups vertically. Once this is done the members can be chosen from either year group and should result in 1 mixed class.

 

Seek advice from your support company before doing this as it could affect other areas such as timetabling.

 

The other way it might manifest is if your register is actually a timetabled lesson, in which case your vertical structure needs to be reflected in the timetable so that you can combine students from both year groups into the one year. We were going to do this for our IB (Sixth Form) but didn't like the possible complication for the rest of the timetabled lessons which weren't supposed to be mixed, so avoided it. I did get some info from Capita support to help explain how to operate the timetable that way.

 

See what is going on, and the hopefully your support team can advise how to fix it, perhaps best to do this starting next year though.

 

EDIT: Sorry, partly mis-read what you were trying to achieve. I think keeping the pastoral structure as split but combining years in the timetabling side should do what you want.
