Can you install CC4 RMMC on standalone computer?

Hi

 

Just been asked if it is possible to install CC4 RMMC on a standalone computer? Head of IT uses it and wondered if it could go on his laptop to reset passwords and view students work areas etc.

 

Never seen it before but thought i would check on here to see if it was possible. The computer would be on the wireless network and could be manually added to the domain if needs be.

I would not think so as it would require the laptop to be built onto the network first and the RMCC4 console deployed to this laptop and the user to be part of the delegated user type to be able to use it.

 

Its the way the software integrates with the Postgres backend on the DC as to who has the rights to actually run the RMMC and this would not in principal allow just any user to use the console.

 

This are just my thoughts from experiencing RMCC4 and how it works in principal.

Closest thing you could do would be to smart client his laptop then allocate the RMMC product after.

CC3 over wifi was really slow, I think we moved away before CC4 took hold, I wouldnt recommend it unless your wifi is really quick.

Check if you have RMMC remote access enabled? It's a website, installs the RMMC remotely. It's usually https://pdc/rmmc

Hi Nick, I'm also interested in this and I just tried the url https://pdc/rmmc but just failed to load anything. Is there a way to enable it? Or is it an add on you buy into?

Getting closer to getting this remote access to work. Just getting an authentication error when i try to login now. Have tried everything in this tec article TEC1712955 but does anyone have any ideas?

 

It lets me login but then says Authentication Error: Cannot contact the server

That used to work in CC3 when RMMC was web-based. RMMC in CC4 is now an installed app and need a connection to the Postgress database on the forest root server.

 

Personally I'd install it on a workstation somewhere else and let him RDP into it from his laptop.

How is he logging into the laptop, if at all? The server will need an authenticated connection. You'll probably have to join the laptop to the domain. The user will then have to log on with Domainname\DomainUsername. He'll need to log on as Computername\localUserName at home. So no, it will no longer be a standalone laptop as such. Vanilla domain computer at work, and stand alone at home. That's if you've managed to install all the RMMC components ofc.

 

TBH, it would be much easier to build it as a CC4 laptops then give him Privileged user, Personal laptop registry policy and Standard (or no) Security. That way you can still make sure it's included in WSUS, AV updates and you can get it so sync his home directory but he can still install what he likes and override the proxy settings when at home.

Hi The_IT_Guy,

 

Just to update you I managed to find a solution with using RMMC Remote Access. It allows me to run the RMMC via the internet and can either run it directly over the internet or run and install it.

 

Needed some tweaking to the SSL certificate for our easylink. We don't use easylink so had to renew the certificate.

 

For anyone else look at TEC articles TEC1257812 and TEC1712955.

 

Never knew this feature existed but think it is going to be really useful.

Good stuff, it might help @The_IT_Guy out rather than having to build the laptop onto the network, we have this enabled for remote access with delegated user types on our RDP server.
