System Centre - SQL Licence

Morning,

 

I am in the process of building system centre.

 

Now i have a question regarding SQL licencing.

 

I want to get SQL standard 2014. I know its licences per core. I have an older server that I no longer use. it however has 12 hard cores with 24 total (Hyperthreaded)

 

So for licencing SQL i need to buy a licence to cover the 12 cores? Costing me a bomb!

 

What do other schools do? Build a purpose built HyperV machine for a set ammount of cores for hyper V?

 

I just dont like the idea of having a machine built with Hyper V on it, to then host system centre.

I bought my license through Microsoft EES agreement via Millgate. If you want to buy Windows Server License as well then you might want to buy as the bundle as

Core Infrastructure Server (CIS) Suite Datacenter or Standard

 

 

CIS comes with Windows Server, System Center and SQL

According to the net, If you are only using the SQL instance for SCCM, then there is no additional licences needed as it's included in the SCCM licence (and tbh I can't remember providing a license key for my SQL 2014 standard installation for SIMS or for SQL 2008!)

 

If you decide to run additional databases as well as the SCCM from that SQL install, then you have to licence the SQL properly
