Problem when re-directing AppData

Hey Guys,

 

So I redirected our AppData to Users H: drives to make the students log in times quicker and it seems to have helped. Though now it seems that some students have no Wallpaper (Used to be the standard Windows 7 wallpaper, now it's just black) and their shortcuts which where in the task bar such as Windows Explorer, IE and Chrome have become little white blocks which now say they can't find the application/shorcut.

 

Anyway I can rectify both these issues?

What happens when the pupil re-creates them and then logs off and on again?

Don't redirect to a mapped drive, redirect to a UNC path instead. Shouldn't be a problem with that. I suspect the problem is that it is trying to access the redirected Appdata folder before the drive mapping has been established.

When the student re-creates the shortcuts on the task bar and logs off and on again the shortcut is fine!? It's then fine for that user on any computer. Problem is these are primary school children and don't know how to do this on their own, I was wondering if there was anything I can do? Also how do I get the Desktop Background back?

It's mapped using a UNC path not via the drive letter.

I have a group policy setting the desktop background...

 

User Settings | Policies | Administrative Templates | Desktop | Desktop | Desktop Wallpaper

 

set it to where the Windows 7 one is... I personally have a swishty school logo one

 

There must be a way to force taskbar shortcuts in group policy too,,,,

try this for your task bar. Set how you want it look on a machine, then export the reg file and deploy it using GPO.

Cheers Will give this a go! Do you know the path where the standard Windows 7 Wallpaper sits? I don't know wether to enter it as C:\windows.png or do I point it towards a server path \\server name\windows.png

Cheers guys for all your help it's most appreciated! I've implemented the new GPO's including the registry update fix for the task bar. Though it seems to have fixed the majority I'm finding some pupils are still having problems and just get the white files on the task bar. Any other suggestions regarding this? I should also mention I did a gpupdate /force on that machine but nothing changed?

 

The wallpapers seems to be all good though! 😊
