dastrix Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 Ok so we have quite a few staff that would like to trash there laptops and use a Chromebook instead. I have quite a few ideas going around of how to achieve this RDS, or is there a way of getting Registers onto a webpage and marksheets. Does anyone do this currently? we use SLG at the moment but personally not a fan at all and speed isn't great.
zag Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 I think Teacher's WebFolder - Cross-platform, browser-based MIS access can do this. Forget SLG, nobody is going to use sharepoint to take registers... 1
dastrix Posted June 16, 2015 Author Posted June 16, 2015 Is there any other way we can get a webui for sims?
PhilNeal Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 (edited) Firstly, many schools do use SLG for registration. Secondly you have some options for running on Chromebooks - Remote App works extremely well. Several providers also provide a hosted SIMS service and these may (our definitely does) support Chromebooks. Edited June 18, 2015 by vikpaw remove sales figures
dastrix Posted June 16, 2015 Author Posted June 16, 2015 Slg is way to slow to use in the classroom for doing registers, currently it's only used for reports when not on site. Could you recommend any of these providers?
PhilNeal Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 It shouldn't be slow. Capita & SCOMIS are the ones I know about and would recommend both
dastrix Posted June 16, 2015 Author Posted June 16, 2015 Well it was set up how capita said and it's awfully slow
matt40k Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 SharePoint is a bit of a beast, you need at least 24gb ram to run it on a single server. It's often a bit of a sledge hammer and a nut scenario for most folks.
Boredguy Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 SLG is certainly slow for us but it is remote hosted. It's fine for parents to connect in to see data for their children, but for staff to do anything it can be a bit clunky. RemoteApp should work nicely if you can run a RDP server onsite for them to connect into via a Gateway.
dastrix Posted June 16, 2015 Author Posted June 16, 2015 Yeah have tried this but on a chromebook it doesnt seem possible as it doesn't redirect to the correct server.
vikpaw Posted June 18, 2015 Posted June 18, 2015 TASC software will also let you take attendance, similar to TWF. Both are replacements for SLG though, so would be added cost, which you'd find hard to justify, unless you're planning on replacing SLG.
synaesthesia Posted June 18, 2015 Posted June 18, 2015 Do you have a VLE? A few providers, our favourite being @OvernetData have systems that will link Moodle etc to SIMS and allow registration, plus offer mobile variants also.
dastrix Posted June 18, 2015 Author Posted June 18, 2015 We don't have anything at the moment we used to use Talmos but scrapped it, another slow share point offering

This is one of the reasons why we currently pay for Teacher's Webfolder SD, but I'd like the full SIMS client on a Chromebook.

It will not run legacy thick client applications. You need a browser based MIS. Have you tried any browser MIS?
PhilNeal Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 RemoteApp allows you to run virtually any thick client in Azure and render on Chromebooks, iPads etc. It is very effective!
matt40k Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 It is very effective! Yes, its very effective at running up the old credit card bill and eating Azure commit (Sorry couldn't resist)
Bromcom-PR Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 (edited) Yes, its very effective at running up the old credit card bill and eating Azure commit (Sorry couldn't resist) Or its like painting school blackboards with a coat of white emulsion and tell teachers they have 'white boards'! RemoteApp is nothing but coat of emulsion. You still have 'thick client' that is extremely inefficient and costly for cloud deployment. "Same old Software as a Service" (So-SaaS): In technical terms this is called "Same old Software as a Service" (So-SaaS). It is up 50 fold more expensive than WebApp in terms of memory and associated CPU, power supply, space and ventilation etc... and very bad for green environment policies. One way or the other, you pay very dearly for this either through your own infrastructure or to MS Azure or others. Recently Harris Federation has chosen to drop all legacy WinApp MIS and they are switching to WebApp based MIS saving tons of servers hosted in their own data centre that service their 36 Academies. theeggmaster Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 RemoteApp allows you to run virtually any thick client in Azure and render on Chromebooks, iPads etc. It is very effective! My question is which Chrome App allows you to run RemoteApp? We have SIMS published with RemoteApp and it's only on Chromebooks that we can't access it due to no suitable RemoteApp Chrome apps. I'm guessing you could use Android's RemoteApp through Arc Welder, but that isn't great to ask staff to setup. What are Capita using for their hosted Azure?
matt40k Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 I would guess the default Microsoft one - https://www.remoteapp.windowsazure.com/en/clients.aspx
mattstevenson2005 Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 I use sharepoint 2013 split across a 3 server farm. I have SLG for parents to access data and we use it for staff to take registers and do mark sheets on macs and other non Windows clients. I have gone a lot further and have taken all parental communications paperless using sharepoint and InfoPath. We are a completely paperless school in terms of communications and sharepoint has been a brilliant way to do it. Sharepoint is a beast but I have become a pro at it over the last 4 or 5 years of using it fully. We now even build our own custom webparts forum to add extra features. You do need need very high spec hardware for it to running smoothly and also the SLG side can place a high demand on the SIMS servers resources when accessing data. Our entire sharepoint 2013 is built on our VMware platform and each servers has 30+GB RAM multiple vCPUs and sit on 15k SAS fibre channel SANs. If anyone else is interested in using sharepoint I would be happy to share my experiences
theeggmaster Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 I would guess the default Microsoft one - https://www.remoteapp.windowsazure.com/en/clients.aspx Unfortunately, none of those options are for Chromebooks.
dastrix Posted April 22, 2016 Author Posted April 22, 2016 You can add a product called Ericom they do a html 5 rds module which is an option
theeggmaster Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 (edited) You can add a product called Ericom they do a html 5 rds module which is an option Yes, I've looked at that, but I was hoping to do this for free, so I've been looking at FreeRDP-Webconnect and Guacamole, but if Capita has a preferred solution, I would like to look at that. Microsoft also have HTML5 for Azure RemoteApp available in public preview. Also, we may be able to use the actual Android RDP client on Chromebooks in the future (link).
