I had Spiceworks set up for network inventory and helpdesk, but it borked during the last update so I uninstalled and reinstalled. I couldn't back up any settings as I wasn't getting that far in opening the program. It's almost 3 years since I set it up and now I can't remember how I did it :( (Blah, blah Documentation blah......one day, I promise!)

I set scan running overnight so as to reduce impact on the network using the hostname of my DC and its ip address but nothing was picked up. My guess is that it needed a domain username and password to find anything - the account I used is one I created 3 years ago when I registered for Spicework, which doesn't have any admin rights. Assuming I'm on the right track, do you log in with your own account? If so, where is my password sent to and stored? If not, what rights do you give the account that you use?

Or am I miles wide of the mark? :)

Thanks

Indeed, the network scan uses a domain account, so enter yourdomain\yourusername and the associated password. Might be an idea to create a domain account just for Spiceworks to keep things neat and for auditing reasons. I'm sure there will be info on t'interwebs about what privileges it needs.

I'm pretty sure that it says next to the field that you need to enter a domain account though- so is it something completely different that you're talking about?

I just clicked "quick scan" last night :) It doesn't mention anything about accounts on the front page, only in the advanced settings, which I didn't check until it hadn't worked this morning... There it says domain account, with the default being the account you log in to Spiceworks with. Three years ago, I created a domain account for Spiceworks, but only used it for the help desk, so I guess I used my domain account for the inventory. Just wanted to check I was heading in the right direction before I start changing domain account stuff.

Thank you
