Small LAB NAS

Weighing up NAS options for a small lab based on ESXi. I am not a fan of FreeNAS to be honest.

 

Options for the SAN OS are:

 

Windows 2012 R2 (VM or Bare Metal)

OpenFiler (as VM or BareMetal)

NexantaStor Community Edition (not to sure about this on VM)

 

I have successfully used OpenFiler as a Storage Appliance and it does work quite well as long as the host has the resources, i.e. it was OK on the N36L with one other VM but not on a N40L with 4 other VM's running, both hosts have 8GB RAM.

 

Bought a IcyDock 4 Bay SAS/SATA Hot Plug cage that will fit in a MicroServer and this with a suitable RAID card would give a few options.

 

Has anyone got any more suggestions.
