Ubiquity - CCTV

Hi,

 

Not a wireless question, but most of us know ubiquity for their wifi offer, so I figured I stand the best chance of getting an answer by posting here! Does anybody have any experience with their CCTV offer?

Yes. As much of a fan of UniFi as we are, I can't really recommend their current offerings - quality is fairly poor, and for the price you're better off looking at the Hikvision units, which is our current go-to camera of choice.

We have 3 of the Ubiquiti Dome cameras and 3 Bullets. Quality is the same on all of them, the dome's are particularly susceptible to light interference.

Shame, as we love the controller UI.

Is your experience with the original AirCam models or the newer UniFi Video Camera range?

They're branded Aircam - one of the bullets is AirCam.v3.0.9.25

Does anybody have any experience with their CCTV offer?

 

Yes - we have 10 of their dome cameras installed now. We've found image quality (720p video feeds) to mostly be pretty good, although that was in comparison to an old analouge CCTV system, so maybe we're not expecting enough. We have one camera that suffers from a rolling shutter effect (flickering stripes on the image) from being placed next to a flourescant strip light, but images in the rest of the building are good. After a few weeks use now, we've found a couple of cameras sometimes stop working - switching them off and on again (i.e. taking the PoE-providing ethernet cable out for a few seconds) fixes that, and we've only had to do it a couple of times, we'll see if it becomes an issue. The software you get with the cameras is pretty good, especially as it's free, and disk size / performance requirements seem reasonable - we have ours recording to an 8 x 2TB drive QNAP device in RAID 6, so 12TB of usable storage, and we seem to be on track for around 6 months retention time.

Did you try altering the frequency in the controller software? If memory serves me right, there's 50hz and 60hz and switching between them can eliminate, or near as dammit, said flickering.

We are purely Hikvision - Cameras connected to the POE NVR's and then centrally viewed/managed from client software. Quality is amazing especially the PTZ cameras.

Yes, we tried, it didn't solve the problem - I did wonder if the setting didn't actually change the hardware framerate but simply the framerate the video was encoded at. The problem could be caused by something else, of course - the camera is working well enough for us, so we haven't investigated much further.
