psydii Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 (edited) Home setup. OS X 10.10.3 AiportExpress on 5Ghz. DHCP provided by broadband provider's ancient 2.4Ghz only router. Airport connected to router via CAT5e. All devices connect via the 5Ghz radio on the Airport Express. Problem: Macbook ProRetina suddenly lost connectivity through the Airport. Yet iPhones and iPads connect fine. MBPR can't ping anything, and sometimes now does not get an IP from the DHCP server... but sometimes it does. We generally avoid using the 2.4Ghz band because every single channel 1-14 is being used by neighbours and most at at -75dB or better. However as a test I moved the MBPR onto the 2.4Ghz network... and it worked (though pings and throughput is erratic, but that is par for the course given the rf environment) internet and everything else now works.... except that I can't ping the Airport. The iPhones and iPad can ping the AirportExpress, the router and the MBPR. The MBPR can see the iPhones and the iPads and the BB Router (I ran nmap to have a look). The MBPR and the Airport have different IP addresses. airport sniff en0 generates a pcap file containing everything I'd expect (i.e. encrypted traffic etc from other devices, and nothing looks unhealthy) Wireshark capture at layer 3 looks unhappy. mostly no responses to any traffic, with the occasional brief burst of life as one of the background cloud apps successfully connects to its service. So after an hour of so of diagnostics, rebooting routers and the airport multiple times... I just gave in and restarted the MBPR. It now works fine. Edited April 17, 2015 by psydii
