StewartKnight Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 I've got a Fedora server thats running my helpdesk and Moodle. It gets to a certain point in the boot up, then ...... nothing. The hard drive spins a bit, but the screen is saying that there is no signal being received, and the computer isn't up. When I press the button to shutdown, the screen comes alive, and tells me all the stuff thats it's shutting down. Has anyone got a clue whats happening? I don't want to rebuild this machine if I can help it Is there a way of booting that I don't know, that gives me command line instead of the gui?
Geoff Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 Is SSHd running? You might be able to login remotely with Putty? Failing that start the machine in single user mode? It sounds like X is misconfigured, in paticular the graphics card or monitor settings. Have you changed any of the hardware recently?
StewartKnight Posted January 10, 2006 Author Posted January 10, 2006 That is what I thought too, which is why I wanted to logon without the gui. That was my 1 and only linux box, so I can't logon remotely, and I assume that the box isn't contactable anyway. I did change the monitor, when I moved it to a new location. Thats when it stopped working. I put the old monitor back on it, but it still wouldn't boot. If I can get in on command line, that would eliminate the problem, if it is X, I just don't know how on Fedora!
webman Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 If it's networked, can you ping it from another machine? If so, you can access it from a Windows box using PuTTY (Windows software) as mentioned by Geoff. EDIT: Perhaps the new monitor doesn't support the required resolution/refresh rates as used by the previous one - thus not showing anything on startup and only the text on shutdown/reboot.
