This is driving me crazy. I've created a custom Windows 8.1 image to be used on a USB stick for setting up standalone PCs.

I've got everything perfect except I just cannot get the start screen layout set for the default profile.

I'm using CopyProfile in my unattend answer file. This does work as position of the desktop shortcuts seem to carry across ok.

I've tried the Export-StartLayout and Import-StartLayout commands on this page: Customizing the Windows 8.1 Start Screen? Don’t follow Microsoft’s guidance | Aaron Parker

Still results in getting the default start screen.

Any suggestions?

Thanks. Just had a closer look at this page: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj134269

Apparently this only works for: Windows 8 Enterprise, Windows Server 2012, or a domain-joined PC running Windows 8 Pro

I'll stick it on a domain and see if that does the trick.

Edit: Can confirm after testing with Windows 8 Pro:

Standalone: It will ignore the imported start screen layout

Joined to domain: It will apply the custom start screen layout

Not what I was hoping for.
