Kjw96 Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 Hi everyone, I am looking to upgrade the RAM (memory Modules) to 2 x 8GB. However, on Appl's site there are 4 different modules but all have the same name. one has 1600MHz and another has 1866MHz, I am not sure which one I need. Please help !! 1
tmcd35 Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 Find the model on EveryMac: Mac Specs, Prices, Answers and Comparison @ EveryMac.com, Est. 1996 - it'll should tell you the exact correct memory specs for your machine.
mac_shinobi Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 Am sure you could either 1) Use the crucial website for your country so UK / USA etc and manually select which model of apple mac you have and it will show / tell you what RAM you need exactly 2) Am sure there is a dmg you can download from there site which will scan your mac and take you to the page which will tell you what RAM Crucial Home Page | United States (USD)
Kjw96 Posted March 25, 2015 Author Posted March 25, 2015 im still stuck on the apple website theres 4 RAM all same spec and Hz and I don't know if some are for the MacBook's or not. Ive had people say that the one I brought wasn't the right one and it was for the macbooks not for the mac tower pro 2.8GHz quad core intel xenon and I need DDR3. Why do macs have to be so awkward.
tmcd35 Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 I'd start by not buying the RAM from Apples website! Probably the most expensive place you could source it from. Check you machine on Everymac or with Crucial and then order the generic equivalent from eBuyer.
Kjw96 Posted March 25, 2015 Author Posted March 25, 2015 But can you remove the RAM from the macbooks and upgrade it or are they builtin within the board and can not be removed ?
Kjw96 Posted March 25, 2015 Author Posted March 25, 2015 says the minimum ram speed is 1066MHz but I need to know the maximum and I cant locate it anywhere
Joanne Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 take out the existing stick and see what speed it says? Mac's are just the same as standard PC's / laptops... I bought normal RAM and SSD for my macbook pro a couple of months ago from ebuyer and it works fine.
Kjw96 Posted March 25, 2015 Author Posted March 25, 2015 the thing is its not for me and I haven't seen it someone I know is trying to get some but isn't giving me any help at all and all they have said is the one I got is for the MacBook not the mac tower pro so im so confused I ay got a clue in hell. a chimp would be better.
tmcd35 Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 Someone will no doubt correct me if I'm wrong, but faster RAM usually runs fine at a lower speed if the mobo doesn't support it's maximum speed. If Everymac suggests 1066Mhz, then buy the 1600Mhz chip and it will either run at that speed or slow down to accommodate the hardware. Better still, go on eBuyer and see if you can find a suitable 1066Mhz chip that matches the specs reported on Everymac, or use Crucial site to select the exact compatable stick for that machine.
Joanne Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 was it full length DIMM RAM or the SODIMM type? Just tell them without seeing it in the flesh you can't help any further.
Oddbod Posted March 26, 2015 Posted March 26, 2015 Just get them to download and run the crucial system scanner ( it removes itself after completion) which is far better than buying ram blind… (never a good thing ) http://uk.crucial.com/gbr/en/systemscanner
