Free squid proxy alternative

Hi guys,

 

I am looking for a windows based or easy to install alternative to squid, ideally free.

 

I currently have squid installed on Windows for our students to access the internet through, as a cache and allowing me to log what they are looking at and block certain sites. But I would like something that would provide more information as to what they are looking at. Any ideas?

I'm currently trying out Diladele B.V. - it uses squid 3 but the reporting looks pretty good so far

 

its not free but 399euro's/year isn't bad

Thanks ill have a look at them.

 

In the meantime done anybody know of a good Squid reporter and analyzing tool? We currently have SARG but I dont find it that detailed.

Untangle is great for a UTM type device, PfSense is all out security, filtering, firewall, router.

I just would like it as a replacement to our squid box as I feel the reporting side lets it down.

Reporting is good in Pf, if your only running squid - you could run it in a VM.

I've been looking at alternatives to my meru captive portal. So been playing with pfsense and untangle.

Pfsense very good security, could not get captive portal to work (my lack of knowledge). Very good logs etc.

installed untangle yesterday as a matter of fact. Easy install 10 minutes after the install I had my captive portal working and NAT img between network. Easy to configure web filtering and firewall.

I will continue to play with pfsense but for ease I'd go untangle. The bits I need are free but there are paid for modules if you need more bells

shorewall firewall can run squid & the documentation looks decent.

We have a Smoothwall UTM but also have a pfSense firewall with squid setup in case of emergency (and for us testing in the office) pfSense seems to be a very good free alternative, it required some extensive setting up for us though.
