Drive map fails using IP

We have a user with a stand alone MAC who has previously mapped a shared drive via an IP address which has worked up until this week. There was a reboot of the server on Wednesday (restart after windows updates it looks like) and since then he is unable to access the shared drive. It seems that if I map by the ServerName\share it works, but IP\share doesn't. If I look at the logs I can see an Audit Failure with error 0xC000006D Sub Status 0x0.

 

I've managed to track it back to changing the LAN Manager authentication level --> change this value to Send LM & NTLM from responses suggested here which works on a Windows 7 Client but I'm reluctant to change settings on the server as it was previously working. What I would like to do is change this setting on the MAC client but from what I've read on-line the only suggestions seem to be changing this setting on Windows. I'm not a MAC user and don't have one to test on, but can anyone point me in the right direction of how to do this, or even if it is possible?

If it works via \\servername\share why do you need it to work via IP?

Just to update this thread. It turns out we had an issue with authentication after the KB3002657 patch on our DC's. It looks like there was an issue with an early version we had installed after a removal things started working again. More information here

That's a good question actually - why map to an IP and not the FQDN? Mapping to the FQDN of course relies on DNS, in the event you changed your server IP for example, it would still work.

Just to clarify we were only trying to map to IP because of 1 client (MAC) not being able to map via FQDN. It turned out that we couldn't map via IP and couldn't understand why. This ended up being a bigger problem as it then migrated onto our Exchange servers as users were unable to get mail as they failed to authenticate for the same reason - failing on ntlm. I just wanted to update the post because it took a while for us to find the reason as there wasn't much on the web about it.
