LCD touchscreen vs Smartboard and projector

Doing some research on adding some AV into a new classroom and was wondering if a LCD touchscreen would be better than the traditional setup of a Smartboard and projector.

 

Whilst doing my research I came across this blog on the AV Magazine website.

 

They state that the biggest problem with the traditional setup is the power costs vs the two.

 

Has anyone else seen a big difference in this when switching over?

 

I am thinking something must be majarily wrong on their figures as they state power consumption for a average smartboard is 2 kW and projectors 2-400W.

 

I measured our LED projectors they draw 130W and our computers that have a smartboard plugged in draw between 30-70W depending on computer model.

 

Can anyone work out these figures?

I think his figures must be wrong. Any interactive board drawing 2KW is surely going to be giving off so much heat its unbelievable.

I thought as much @Meldrew the bad thing is I received a sales email as well from another unrelated company to the above blog stating these figures as to why there solution is better value to the traditional setup.

 

I hoping other schools especially primaries and the likes without technical people will be able to work this out and don't fall for the "savings" in buying the new touchscreens

There are still considerable cost savings over a traditional projector / IWB set-up. I wouldn't dismiss it, although this particular report seems fairly unscientific.

 

Still need to factor in expected product life compared to a projector, bulb replacement, filter cleaning on non-DLP projectors.

 

Roughly -

Projector life; 5 years

Panel life; 10yrs+

New bulb every three yrs?

 

LED projectors use less power than a traditional projector and I would guess they are benchmarking against a traditional projector. I would also argue to get anywhere close to the brightness of a panel you would need a very bright projector, again increasing power consumption.

 

Personally I don’t think a typical 2000ansi XGA projector vs a Full HD LED Panel is a fair fight. It’s not really comparing like for like in terms of clarity and brightness for a classroom.

 

Projector still wins in terms of image size. Price needs to comedown on the larger size panels still.

touchscreens have many benefits over the traditional IWB but power isn't really one of them.

 

a SMARTboard takes power off the USB at 1.5w... can't be 2kW (Promethean AFAIK is mains powered but can't think it's much) a DLP projector with an intelligent power system ranges dynamically from 60-230w.

 

In comparison a 70" screen is 300w max, and 65" 265w max.

 

Also to consider the usage of the projector v touchscreen, the later will likely to be left on longer as it has a wider usage than the whiteboard did.

 

plenty of benefits, just not energy saving.
