Add a shared printer for all users in XP

Hey all,

 

Sure this is really simple for someone that's not me

 

WinXP. I am sharing a usb printer on workstation1. How do I add it for all users on workstation 2?

Put the following in a text file then change the extension to .cmd

 

rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /ga /n\\HOSTCOMPUTER\PRINTERNAME

start /wait sc \\%1 stop spooler

start /wait sc \\%1 start spooler

You'll need to reboot the computer after running it.

 

You can use that to install any network shared printer to a computer for all users.

 

If you need to remove the printer change the /ga to a /gd

Added local group policy via snapin for that workstation and put the printer.cmd script in the computer config startup folder but this hasn't worked for some reason. In the end I just went for \\hostname\printername as a scipt. Problem sorted now, thanks for your help, muchly appreciated

Out of interest, are you only looking to push this out to a couple of machines?

 

If not, perhaps a more complex script similar to my one that will check the computers location in AD and then map the correct printer(s) accordingly? This can then be called up via a User Login Script or Startup Script I would imagine too.

 

Give me a shout if you would like a copy of the script.

Alternatively (for everyone's reference) you can add multiple print servers within Windows Server 2003 R2, then distribute it to particular users or computers (or both) within any number of OUs.

I know this thread is years old but thanks MrForgetful, this sorted out my printer problem.

 

How can I add to this to make the printer in the command the default printer for all users?
