Proper Previous versions / Manage Versions (thinking out loud)

AFAIK the manage version feature in Office integrates with SharePoint to allow you to browse previous versions of a document. Are new versions taken automatically every few minutes or is just every time the user remembers to press save?

 

Would be amazing if this integrated with VSS/previous versions (which I love BTW). If it is not possible to make a shadow copy of just one file using VSS then the manage versions button should allow you another method of browsing previous versions instead of using the right click over folder and choose previous versions tab.

 

AFAIK OneDrive versions are taken automatically every few minutes. Perhaps even triggered by making changes to a document.

 

I guess this kind of functionality is only possible when using a database like storage system. Perhaps it would have been possible with WinFS.

 

But why can't Microsoft at least let you see the VSS snapshots from inside Word or Excel. Does anyone know if this is possible and just not enabled by default if VSS is enabled on drive the file is saved to.

 

 

Any improvements on this front in Office 2013 (over 2010)?
