Moving to AD Integrated DNS

Anybody able to advise on this one?

 

Assisting with an upgrade at one of our Primary Schools and fixing a few things as I go along. At the moment the DNS is just in a primary zone file, which has been working fine. I was planning to move this to AD integrated for the domain instead of a primary zone. It's a single DC at the moment, I'm replacing it with a shiney new server and then getting rid of the old DC. So now for the questions....

 

1. Moving to AD Integrated DNS is a good idea, right?
   
2. Assuming it is, I am guessing that it's a simple matter of changing it from Primary to Primary AD Integrated?
   
3. _msdcs is still a sub folder of school.domain at the moment, which i think means it was likely upgraded from Server 2000 if I've read up rightly. Should I be recreating this as a primary zone and delegating _msdcs out?
   
4. Anything else that I've missed in considering this?

Are you migrating them or are you just building a whole new domain?

3. Leave it as it is

4. That's pretty much it. I trust you're going to use AD integrated DHCP too?

 

One thing though - make sure you clean up your DNS as much as possible before integrating it. Get rid of any stale or dead objects.

I did it the other week anyway and just took the plunge and haven't had any problems yet (touch wood).

 

The domain is staying as it is, I'm just bringing in a new server and transfering the data/domain across to it with a new windows install.
