I love the idea of smart mouse traps. However, I doubt many places would pay £32+ for each mouse trap!

It won't take off. IBM are just trying to sell their Cloud services. Microsoft released .NET Micro framework ages ago, boards like Netduino have been around long before Raspberry Pi and even Microsoft are looking at using the Raspberry Pi hardware, why, because its a complete package. Think the first generation of Raspberry Pi'ers will be turning 16 this year, give it a few more years they'll be coming out with new innovating ideas, why would they want to learn a proprietary system when they've already learnt a open system, especially when its back with so many big players like Microsoft, Oracle, Ubuntu as well as universities.

That's the thing - surely this stuff exists in the form of Arduino? I was using a network equipped early Arduino when I was in uni in 2005/6! What does this setup offer that's new?

It doesn't, that's my point. It's IBM attempt at trying to lock people in to their products, they hope you'll develop the next big thing and they'll do the backend bit, but why would you use it over an open platform?
