Hey Guys,

Having some big problems with the printer used for our Admin staff. The printer is on a Print Server and the client machines are sending prints to it just fine but then the printer does nothing and when investigating on the server it says the printer has encountered an error on that job, though it does it on every job....? Sometimes it works fine, other times it doesn't. I don't know where to go from here, I've tried re-building the machines, adding new print drivers and then re-deploying. But still nothing will work?

Any ideas that could help would be most appreciated!? I have a member of staff here really flapping about the whole situation, even though she can print to every other printer in the school....?

Thanks :)

Sounds like the printer has a hardware problem.

Could it be that the memory of the printer is on it's way out or just getting overloaded. I'm guessing it doesn't work when you turn it off and on again?

To get on the good side of the admin staff is there another printer you can swap in as a temp to give you time?

Is the printer under warranty still?

A few steps you could consider ..

1) What make/model is the printer

2) Have you tried it connected directly to a PC using USB or something to rule out the print server from the equation

3) Looking at the management tool for the printer on the computer once it's using USB (so you can use the full bloaty driver / software pack instead of just the drivers you'd use on the print server)

Don't think it's the memory, it's normally only the admin staff that print to this and it will freeze when just one job is on it!

We don't have any other spare printers :(

Nope unfortunately not must be around 2-3 years old now.

It's a Brother HL-4150CDN.

Yup and it seems to work perfectly fine, so I'm thinking has to be something wrong with the server.

Edit: I have also been told that the printer seems to be working fine on everyone else's computer it seems to be a problem with just this one member of staff!? It also doesn't matter what computer she logs on to it always does it from every machine. The only difference about the way she uses the network off the top of my head is that the admin computers are 32bit machines and all the others are 64bit around the school!?

What OS is on the server and client?

What type of printer drivers and versions are being used on the server and for the clients ?

How was the print que and printer drivers setup on the server to be used for the clients ?

Regardless of os client side I presume it is fine for other staff,

Just the one user that is having issues ?

I'm a bit out of date with my techy skills nowadays but I'd thought replace the network cable\try another network socket\something networky be my first port of call.

Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows 7 Pro

Latest from the website I have tried it with all drivers, Windows 7 32Bit, Windows 7 64Bit and Windows Server 2008 R2 64bit Driver from the bother website.

I have the printers installed locally on the server, make sure the printer is shared, then dished out using GPP Preferences like all my other printers.

I have just tested other members of staff, they aren't going through the server they seem to be going straight to the printer and that's why it's printing fine with them. Also if I add the printer to the Server with just the Server driver installed then try and print directly from the server nothing will come out, I have checked the Queue and t shows the job as paused then when I manually resume it, it deletes the job!?

I think it would be all users if they went through the Server.

Sounds similar to a problem that we had before with an HP LaserJet. That wasn't just for one user, but would randomly fail to print and throw errors.

That was narrowed to a logic board problem in the end, luckily it was under warranty. I think it was memory at fault, but wasn't replaceable on that machine.
