Basic Switch Quesiton - HP 530X Modules - Which is better to use?

Hi,

 

We are installing a dedicated switch into the server rack. The switch is a used HP 5304XL with the interchangeable modules.

It has one module that has 24 Gig ports and 2 x fibre. (https://h10057.www1.hp.com/ecomcat/hpcatalog/specs/provisioner/05/J4907A.htm)

It has another module that just has 4 x 1Gig ports. (https://h10057.www1.hp.com/ecomcat/hpcatalog/specs/provisioner/99/J4821B.htm)

 

My question is...

The module with just the 4 gig ports, is that just very old technology as it just has 4 gig ports, or was it purchased/used specifically for some reason instead of a 24 ports module?

Is there any benefit from using this one with the 4 ports? or is it just old tech and im reading too much into it or hoping its a better option!!

Could of been 4x Uplink ports to other switches

The modules are either 24x 10/100 or 16 x 100/1000 (which you have) or 4 x 100/1000 (which you have).

 

Clearly the 16 x 100/1000 module is the one to go for, I suspect the 4 x 100/1000 module one one originally released with the switch in 2005, and the 16 port version came along a lot later.

 

It's an old switch, are you sure you want to use it as you're core switch?

Are you sure you want to use the XL as your core switch? I have recently just decommissioned my old 5304XL because it is so old.

 

Im sure its really hard to obtain genuine original modules now aswell hence another reason why we decommed it!

 

I would be looking at HP's 540x range! We bought a 5406zl and it has been amazing.

Thanks for the replies. It isn't actually a core switch it's a switch to go in the server rack for management.

But saying that, our core switch is the larger 5306XL.

It will need replacement soon. It's running a lot of fibre modules so will be a relatively expensive uprade with funding we don't have.
