Bruce123 Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 I was just wondering if any people on this forum are using WOL on their network? If so, do you use off-the-shelf software or is it developed in-house? If you have PCs in multiple subnets, what method do you use to get the magic packets to all of the PCs? Do you use subnet-directed broadcasts from a single host or do you broadcast on each subnet at layer 2 (i.e. from a server/host on the same subnet), or even use unicast packets? What method do you use to determine the list of MAC addresses of the PCs on the subnet? E.g. Manually maintained lists, ARP enabled NICs, DHCP leases, or other method? We plan to use this to plan/schedule updates/installs overnight. And as a secondary objective, to wake up certain slow PCs 30 minutes before the users start in the morning (to speed up logon to desktop). Any advise/ideas are appreciated. Regards, Bruce.
newpersn Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 Computers over vlans. We use impero. Select the computers and click turn on. With impero it's just a dns entry for the server ip address.
DMcCoy Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 WOL is going away... 8 and 8.1 already don't support it, without hybrid boot disabled, and some LAN drivers have had the option removed.
Chris_Cook Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 We use Altiris Deployment Solution 6.9 which does most things on your list. It costs a bit, but its worth it. We use subnet directed broadcasts to work across our vlans.
speckytecky Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 Another + for Impero. It does this and SO much more. Just wish I had time to learn the full range of things it does and can do. I could do with training on it to make the best of it. That said I don't let my teachers and instructors near it. I did once and was forever having to release clients the then Head of ICT kept locking and leaving!
southhamster Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 I use depicus wake on lan. The only pain is creating the .bat file but i use angry ip scanner to capture the mac addresses. This is for a small school, it might be a pig to manage with loads of machines. I also ru psshudown scripts which work nicely
DavetheITguy Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 At my Academy we use EMCO wake up on LAN free. The program is completely free and it syncs with AD. It works really well.
