Google Groups - Access Permissions

Does anyone know of a way to bulk change access permissions in Google Groups? In order for these Groups to be useful in Google Classroom, i.e. to allow staff to invite their classes to a Classroom, it looks like people must have the rights to view the member list, but by default the groups which GADS has created don't have the right settings.

 

I phoned Google, and they told me to change the permissions individually, but that isn't an option as we have literally hundreds of Groups.

You can do this with the GAM command line tool (as many other things). You can get GAM here: https://github.com/jay0lee/GAM/wiki

You can run this as a batch - so if you have a list of the groups and who should belong/be an owner or whatever - you can do them all in one go. GAM is useful for lots of things - bulk changing passwords and so on.

Thanks. As per my comment on the other post, I'm a bit put off by the manual nature of this, ideally I'd like something automated as we have some fluctuation in group membership through the year, plus of course lots of new groups being created each timetable cycle.

To update everyone on this, Salamander are truly awesome.

 

Someone from Salamander saw this thread, and sent me a PM saying they could change it. Less than a day later, and before Google have even accepted there is a problem, Salamander had written, tested and deployed a new version which corrects this! So, Salamander can now be used to manage Groups which teachers can use to invite to classes in Google Classroom.

SalamanderSoft Limited is an application which populates your Active Directory with data from your MIS (SIMS, in our case), so when new students or staff are added in SIMS, they automatically have AD accounts created. It can also sync class lists from SIMS to groups in AD. If you have your Exchange or Google Apps linked to your AD, this will then mean that email accounts get automatically provisioned for every new user as well. Quite shiny, really.

Does the Salamander update allow you to manage the Access Control section completely, or just change the Owner of the group?

Just to say Salamander have worked their magic on our set up and we have the restrictions in place that we need for now.
