Evening guys,

 

Looking at replacing our SAN this year as it's chock of block and had a good run.

 

The work done before I joined the school had the 8GB SAN split into 4 LUNs of 2TB each, and from my understanding the new versions of HyperV etc should support higher than this right? Know VHDs were 2TB but VHDX much bigger? Seems silly having to turn a new SAN (Lets say 30TB) into 15 LUNs if they're not needed to be that small anymore.

What is the recommendation from the SAN manufacturer as well? They may recommend a LUN Size based on the disks native size and your RAID / Pool Setup on it as well as the systems using the disks.

VHDXs can be up to 16TB in size.

 

I think VHDX is up to 64TB in 2012 R2 ?

 

One thing to look at regarding LUN's etc. is if you are using Windows Failover clustering with Hyper-V, you would be looking at Cluster Shared Volumes and storing your VHD's on those.

Honestly not sure yet as still looking at who to replace storage with :) But aye guess should have a nosy into their recommended settings, just in case there's any weird setups hidden away

As long as it's above 2 all good :) Certain servers creating towards that and didn't fancy splitting them up haha :) Just ease of management as always!

 

Aye currently running HyperV cluster as mentioned.

AFAIK Hyper-V itself has never had a LUN size limit, it uses what is presented to it from the host OS. The limit is with the NTFS file format: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc938432.aspx which is 2TB.

 

From what I understand, if you use GPT formatted disks NTFS can be formatted to 16EB, so a lot more than the 2TB limit from the old MBR system. There is also the new ReFS file system: Windows Server 2012: Does ReFS replace NTFS? When should I use it? - Ask Premier Field Engineering (PFE) Platforms - Site Home - TechNet Blogs that would format higher and probably be a better fit if you are just looking for a storage pool to hold VHDX volumes.

 

I suppose the only other limitation would be whether or not your SAN hardware will allow you to create LUNs larger than 2Tb.
