Slow Download/Fast Upload - About to commit.

Hi Guys,

 

At my wits end here! After users complaining about slow internet, I've done a speed test on a few workstations, and I'm getting 3mb download and 100mb upload. On my machine (on the domain, but no user/computer policies applied) I get 100mb upload/download, the way it should be.

 

I thought it must be the machines, so I set up a VM on my machine using the same network card... same issue. Also the same on my admin account so it's not a user policy.

 

The only thing I can think it might be is a computer policy... but which ones would affect internet speeds!? I've done a million driver updates, java updates, flash updates, Windows updates, the lot. Nothing in the event log.

 

Did a deployment of Chrome to about 900 machines the other week, and it just crashes and hangs all the time, I think the 2 issues may be related, IE just doesn't seem as sensitive! Also, when I'm running the speed test, the browser (either of them) hangs for a good 15 seconds on the download speed test, then my test graph looks like this (image attached)

 

Anybody have any ideas?

Are you certain it's not a switch causing the issue? I can't think what computer GPOs would drastically reduce the download speed. I presume you're running Gigabit switches?

It can't be, my computer and the VM are running off the same network cable!

I've found you can limit BITS - Background Intelligent Transfer Service - In Computer Config > Policies > Admin Templates > Network, but this shouldn't affect download speeds from your WAN.

 

If it is a GPO I'd love to know what it is, but I thought you could only restrict bandwidth using software or a firewall solution of some kind.

Don't we all, but remember it's Friday so you don't need to see them for 48 hours!

How about Computer Config > Policies > Admin Templates > Network > QoS Packet Scheduler - Limit reservable bandwidth

 

Everything here should be left to 'Not Configured' so Windows itself manages bandwidth.
