[ipad] Apple TV mirroring - very ad-hoc :(

We have quite a few Apple TV's around the school connected wirelessly to our MERU network.

 

We were alerted yesterday by a teacher that she could n't see it on her list of ATV's to mirror to....

 

On investigation we now find.

 

1. Many AppleTV's are working fine, teacher can mirror to them and they are obviously on the wireless network and show up on our MERU controller in the "Service Control" section.

 

2. Some AppleTV's are showing as connected to the wireless network, have an IP address but do not show up in MERU in the "Service Control" section - and hence the teacher iPads cannot connect to them...as they do not appear on their AirPlay list....

 

3. Some AppleTV's are no longer connected to the wireless network and we are compiling a list so we can go check them out...

 

Nothing has changed on our wireless network since they were all known to be working before Christmas.

 

We have however made some changes (via SWGfL/RM) to our firewall to the school to prevent FaceTime and iMessage from working - I can't see how this would have caused issues with the Apple TV's though as mirroring is just a function of the devices once they connect to our internal wireless network - or are there dark Apple forces at work that somehow the ports we've blocked are affecting certain ATV's?

 

The AppleTV's are connected to the same wireless network as the teacher iPads and are password protected from mirroring, they pick up an IP address via DHCP though we've found static IP's do not seem to help make them be mirrorable!

 

Any ideas?

 

Is not being able to "activate" the AppleTV's preventing some from mirroring?

What does the activation process actually do?

3478 through 3497 (UDP)

5223 (TCP)

16384 through 16387 (UDP)

16393 through 16402 (UDP)

Take down the Apply TV! Burn them in the school playground and dance round them half naked drinking rum!!! Best to do this at night!!!

Well it seems the issue may have been our SMOOTHWALL!

 

I've created a "Location" and put in a couple to IP's of two non-working ATV's.

 

Then under : Web proxy » Authentication » Manage policies

 

Created a Where - AppleTV ; Method No authentication (AppleTVGroup for unauthenticated requests)

 

This then allowed the AppleTV's access to the internet where previously they perhaps could n't.

 

The two test ATV's now appear on the iPADs list and be mirrored to...

 

I don't understand what's changed as some were working before this change....

More problems again today - I went round last week and updated all Apple TV's to the latest software version - some would not download the update and so I reset quite a few - but by the end of last week ALL Apple TV's on site were on the latest version and were on the network.

 

Today if I turn on our test iPad a good 20 out of 46 are no longer appearing on our list of AirPlay devices

 

They are randomly around the network.

 

These things are really starting to pee me off now....
