Long story short there are only a few HP allowed ones (something in the bios) and I can't source one cheaply or quickly! So, as she needs it this weekend I am going to have to go to PC World (yuk) or Argos in about 20 minutes... jmak Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 We have 4 of the HP 620s - I have 3 in my office with borked WiFi cards and one that's flakey in a classroom with a patient teacher. Any idea which cards are allowed by the BIOS? Simple to replace but I don't want to go buying stuff that doesn't work.
glen_j Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 Glad im not the only one having those fail. We bought some buffalo usb wifi cards and they work well. they stick out of the usb port by about 5mm. 1

I just thought it would be neater to replace the card and having removed and re-seated one in an attempt to fix the problem it seemed like a better solution - then I started reading about BIOS locking. Koldov Posted January 26, 2015 Author Posted January 26, 2015 Just be aware... http://www.edugeek.net/forums/hardware/147095-ralink-rt3090-laptop-hp-620-detects-wireless-networks-but-unable-connect.html I bought a new card (unfortunately from Fleabay) I installed it into the laptop and at least had signs of life, but it still would not connect to any of the wireless networks it could see. Every wireless network I tried to join either gave me 'incorrect wireless key' (which it wasn't!) or 'Windows was unable to connect' with no real reason. The wireless card looked genuine, so I'm not sure if it is something further up in the motherboard, maybe there was a different firmware re-programmed on the card, maybe it was always faulty hence why it was on Fleabay ! Anyhow I gave up trying to fix it, I bought the Netgear adapter - seems ok. Kol.
dhicks Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 I've used USB WiFi cards to fix similar problems before (Edimax) which worked well. Me, too - the Edimax ones (I have a couple here labled EW-7811Un) in particular work nicly with the Raspberry Pi.
