DHCP 2 SERVERS

Afternoon all,

 

 

Inherited network setup, require some advice please on best practice / preference on configuration.

 

 

Overview.

 

2 Servers

Operating System 2008 R2 on both

1 Domain

 

When i setup new hardware at times that bit of kit has the ip address allocated and reserved.

 

 

Server A has a different ip displayed range than server B

When reserving an ip address on Server A should i reserve the ip address on Server B?

Or should it have been setup to replicate across both?

When reserving an ip address on Server A should i reserve the ip address on Server B?

Best to otherwise if the client goes to the server without the reservation it will pick up a different IP.

If it's a split scope, there's zero chance of the same IP being distributed.

 

Even if you were distributing the same scope over 2 servers, you'd enable conflict detection (this is how I do it normally). Again, DHCP will decide whether to distribute the IP or not.

 

In server 2012 R2, DHCP replication is possible so it makes managing reservations easier.

It seems the phone system plus other kit has only a reservation on 1 of the 2 servers.

Best practice and fail safe would be to reserve ip's on both servers?

 

Or is it down to the individual network and setup preference?

Old entries and numerous amount of reserved ip addresses.

The easier solution is to only distribute .100 of your range or higher, giving you plenty of scope to reserve IPs for anything below .100

In an ideal world but when DHCP is all over the place it will take time to tidy it up.
