FYI: There's a couple of lync integrated ones on the market already:

 

Busylight Lync - presence indicator & call alert for Microsoft Lync

Busy light for Lync | Stop Interruption in the Office | Presence Indicator by Blync <- that one offers the same features as above without lync installed.

Got my hopes up slightly then... I'm looking for something similar to this that I can put in the window in my door to let people know to come in, as they don't always hear when I bellow lol...

Old PC with a CD tray. Put note on bottom of tray. Fire VB script when you want to invite people in!

or use extension leads and put it on the office door so people can see before they knock/just enter

Our IT techs used to have a little 16x2 LCD screen hooked up to an Arduino that displayed messages; they had an app on their PCs which sent the appropriate message to display via Bluetooth.

 

Always thought it was a great way of getting kids interested as well as being functional
