Has anyone had any issues loading sophos AV client where the management console is on a VM running on Hyper V (2012 server)? It is incredibly slow getting to the Icon to show in the file list then very slow getting to the page where you enter administrator password.

I load Sophos Client from the shared folder rather than deploying it as it is far less hassle.

I navigate to \\TPA-MGMT-01\SophosUpdate\CIDs\S000\SAVSCFXP and then have to wait 5 minutes before I am able to run the setup file, and then another 3 minutes before I can enter credentials.

When the VM was on hyper V on a 2008 server, no problem. There is no issues with performance on the VM or loading any other apps from the VM.

This is the second time I've seen it both times on 2012.

Any thoughts anyone? It's not a show stopper just a PITA!

Cheers

Have you ever thought about setting up groups and allowing Sophos to deploy the client automatically, I've done this at the academy I work at. It makes things so much easier, it deploys and adheres to the policies. I've synced it with AD meaning it will detect all the OU's, so that when a new computer or old one is placed in the container that is linked it will check to see whether the client needs installing or updating. Let me know if you need any more info.

I guess we are talking about the SEC on a VM and you are deploying the client out to other VMs or workstations?

What is the spec of your VM? Mine was running like a dog with only 1 processor so given it 2 and its only got 2Gb RAM and it runs ok.

Syncing Sophos to AD may help the situation. The other thing to think about is what is your network traffic like?

Hi Dave,

I used to do it that way when I managed a large school. Now I only have to worry about 20 pc's and a few laptops and given the issues I had when trying to deploy Sophos automatically to Win 7 devices I now just manually do it. It still registers the device in EM.

Anyway, sorted the issue. It turns out that each network adapter on the Hyper V host has to have "Virtual Queues" disabled otherwise the network runs like a dog.

So all going well now! No more moaning teachers that it seems a bit slow.

Thanks

When we deploy Sophos in this exact environment, we tend to do the auto install as mentioned by @DavetheITguy. Sometimes it doesn't always install automatically so to make sure, we use a batch script to install with the username and password encrypted by the obfuscationutil and add it as a startup script in group policy and apply it to all computers. If you have AD sync setup then your machines will automatically be put into the right groups/folders in SEC!
