Joanne Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 I have a suspected faulty hard drive. I'm defragmenting it and it got up to 42 passes. I cancelled it and started it again and it's up to 26. Normally doesn't it do like, 3 passes? Thoughts?
unixman_again Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 You would probably better off doing a low level format using an external boot disk, rather than a defrag. With the low cost of hard drives these days, I go by the motto "When in doubt, chuck it out".

difinity Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 Run the manufacturers diagnostic software, that will identify if it's bad or not. Defragging using Windows or something like Defraggler ?

SHimmer45 Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 if you have a suspected faulty disk i wouldnt bother defragging, run the vendors diag tool and if it shows errors personally i wouldnt use that disk again.
