I have a suspected faulty hard drive.

I'm defragmenting it and it got up to 42 passes. I cancelled it and started it again and it's up to 26.

Normally doesn't it do like, 3 passes?

Thoughts?

You would probably better off doing a low level format using an external boot disk, rather than a defrag. With the low cost of hard drives these days, I go by the motto "When in doubt, chuck it out".

Defragging or erasing?

Defragging a failing HDD doesn't sound like a good idea if you haven't copied the data you need off of it. :)
