Basic UPS question

Had a quick Power cut yesterday and a few of the servers didn't kick on to the UPS - Turns out they weren't configured properly.

 

 

The UPS`s are physically connected to the servers, but when I go into power options in Control panel it doesn't give any indication of noticing the battery, do you have to install the UPS software for it to work effectively?

Also, I'm not sure the ups that we have is compatible with W2K8 r2? (APC Back UPS 1200) as it comes with the APC personal edition and it says its compatible with Windows 7,8,Home server. (no mention of server)

Even when I connect the data cable (rj45 to usb) to the server it doesn't even pick it up.

Basically, the UPS is just in place of the mains AC supply during a power cut, at least for a limited period. The purpose of connectivity is for the server to know it's on battery power and respond appropriately, e.g. to shut down when the batteries run low, or to instruct VMs to shut down.

 

If the servers powered off when the mains went, either the UPS isn't running properly or it/the batteries are worn out.

You need an APC Smart UPS, the model you have is designed for workstations. I'd suggest using that for switches and then procuring an enterprise UPS.

thanks for that, I thought that it was a workstation one.

So just to confirm, even if you don't install the software on the server it still should go on to battery in the event of a power fail? Its looking like the UPS is failed.

Well, in theory yes

 

I'd also recommend shopping around, we use APC, however I have to admit the web interface is a piece of poo.
