LeMarchand Posted December 17, 2014 Posted December 17, 2014 I have a HP Proliant ML350 G6 server running 2008R2 with 4 disks in a RAID 5 array (controller is Smart Array P410i). One disk is flashing amber, which apparently indicates imminent failure. Have got a replacement disk, but just need to check that all I need to do is to pull out the flashing disk, wait a bit and then insert the new one - all while the server is on.
sted Posted December 17, 2014 Posted December 17, 2014 yup pull it and put in the replacement and it will start rebuilding. Just make sure you have a backup ive not had it go wrong on me but its a definite possibility 1

It gets backed up regularly, and I was going to run another before swapping the disk just in case. Unfortunately it's the school's sole server, and the backups aren't of the "press this button to restore your server to exactly the way it was before it all went wrong" type. I may be back here for help next week!

I may be back here for help next week! pretty much the same issue i face with those servers they are generally the only server in a school and backups are on a nas box in all probability all that will happen is the server will be a bit sluggish for a while as it uses lots of cpu time to rebuild the array which depending on the array and the size of the disk can take days i think i once had one take about a week when i added an extra drive to a raid 5 array and expanded it but theres a few more steps to doing that and i suspect a lot of the time it was waiting for me to remote in and do something (only at that school once a fortnight)
LeMarchand Posted December 17, 2014 Author Posted December 17, 2014 A NAS box? There's posh for you - these are on tape! (Not bad for the odd restore of deleted bits 'n' bobs, but I'd hate to have to restore everything from it.) Thanks for the reassurance.

Luckily moved off tape these days my prefered option is freeenas set as iscsi and using windows backup. For deleted odds and sods i just use volume shadow copy as my primary backup that way people can undelete their own stuff without bothering me (except when some fool deletes a 20+gb folder lol)
