TechSupp Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 (edited) Bought daughter a new laptop for christmas and it has hdmi out (just used vga before) to connect to her TV so she can watch DVD's, the qeb etc on her TV, is there a better way to connect her laptop to the TV (which is not internet enabled or have any usb connections) via wifi etc instead of having them linked with a cable for audio and video? Just thinking, Chromecast any use for what she wants, downsides? And would it handle DVD's? Edited December 13, 2014 by TechSupp

If so you could buy a Miracast adapter for the TV (assuming the Wi-Fi card in the laptop supports it). Microsoft make one (although it isn't available in the UK yet, so you would have to buy it from eBay) as does Netgear. Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter (eBay) Netgear PTV3000 (Amazon) Edit. Chromecast would work if you ripped the DVDs to MP4s using Handbrake and played them through Chrome or an extension like VideoStream. It's a lot of faffing around though. I've got an issue where the projector is quite old and only had a VGA input. I've tried with the VGA/HDMI converters i have but it doesn't work, just wondered if anyone had any success?

It used to be limited to just casting your Google Chrome tab but now you can cast the entire screen including desktop and other apps to it. I can't say i've ever tried a DVD but i'm sure it would be fine. If media player complained you could try play it through xbmc or something. Can't go wrong for the price.

As I understand Chromecast also uses HDMI and not VGA? When i try connecting the casting device (in this case, Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter) to a VGA converter in order to connect to the screen I just get a blank black screen. It seems to detect an input but there is no picture. I'm wondering if anyone has come across this issue before

I personally haven't tried the Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter, but could the black screen have anything to do with the resolution too high for the projector? Have you tried plugging a monitor in the VGA end to see if there is any output on this. 1

I haven't tried a converter, but can't see why an appropriately spec'd one wouldn't work. 1
