Error 0x80070005 in Windows Update when you try to install updates

Hi all,

 

I had been getting the 0x80070005 error when trying to install Windows Updates or trying to install MSU files.

 

I found the following Microsoft Tech article and followed through it.

 

It works away for quite some time, and the final result on the console is as follows:

The failed section appears to show quite a large number. Does anyone know if this is normal? Also, the problem still exists, this fix does not appear to have helped.

 

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Have you checked that "System" has Full Control to the registry location specified in that error?

 

On our workstations all the 5 main registry folders have System set to Full Control

How would I check this? Are you able to check permissions in regedit?

Don't believe I have ever checked such a thing before.

basically the same as file permissions (go to appropriate key and right click then select permissions) but you do it in regedit iirc you can even do it via gpo if needs be

The first registry location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\HPWMIStorage\StorageSyst em\Temp

had the right permissions.

 

However, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\servic es\xmlprov\Parame

ters\SchemaGroups\User\ did not. It had Read only enabled for System.

I changed this to full control, however when I hit apply, it says:

WINDOWS SECURITY:

Unable to save permission changes on User.

Access is denied

 

I am logged in as a system administrator on the server.

You'll need to take Ownership (within the Permissions/Security/Advanced/Owner section) before you can change the permissions usually.

Ah, if its out of date, then it probably isn't as its a Dec 2014 update, though the advise is to uninstall the KB3004394 update

The problem is that it will not even show the updates. If I visit update history, it is just a blank white page.

to remove they are under programs and features in control panel click show updates at the top

Ok thanks, this update was present on the new Win 12k server, and removed, but was not present in the bad Win 2008 server.

I removed from win 12k server and bounced, but it still refuses to find any updates. It just says checking updates for hours with no result.
