1080P or UHD 4K Television Suggestions

The only things capable of 4K gaming at present are two or more 970/980s in SLI or a R9 295X2, and there are times when they struggle. Best to wait on that front for prices to drop and capability to improve.

 

This looks like a decent set, no OLED or curve which is what makes the 930V so expensive LG 49UB820V Televisions - 49” LG ULTRA HD 4K TV - LG Electronics UK

 

Just wondering if anyone has experience of this tv set or can point me to a review that goes through all the pro's and cons of this tv etc

IME it's never worth buying a budget brand TV because the interface is usually horrible; stick to established brands like LG, Panasonic etc. and you get a much more satisfying TV experience.

 

Not as relevant if you're using it as a monitor, but then there's a review on that model that specifically discusses use as a monitor, and it ain't a happy review.

It was running alongside a Samsung 4K curved LED and a flat Sony 4K LED, they looked very smooth but much more washed out. The LG was the same price though, so you have to weigh up whether you want 4K or OLED at present.

OLED doesn't have a backlight - the pixels themselves produce the light source. It means that blacks are true black - as in 'off'. The contrast ratio is nuts. The response time is also very high, meaning it's good for 3D content (though it's passive so the resolution halves) and for fast moving images.

 

It is pricey though.

Samsung have demonstrated glasses-free 3D, but there was a limit of about 7 people who could watch at one time, as that's the maximum number of faces the TV could track. Haven't seen one in action myself, but it works on the same principle a the 3DS. I'm hoping it's much better than a 3DS though, those things are murder on your eyes if you don't have near perfect vision. Also wondering how the face tracking will cope in low light situations, such as lights out for movie night, presumably they'll have to use infrared or something similar...

Apparently Sharp was demonstrating something at this years CES, 85" 8k glasses-free 3D. As far as I can make out it's something to do with the pixel density at 8k that makes glasses-free 3D possible. I may have to get a cheap 4k telly when the PS5's released, just to tide me over!
