speckytecky Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Got an irritating 21 inch iMac that's bound to the AD domain but doesn't seem to want to bind to the Mini Mac Server - sees the network but won't pick up Internet. Comparing it with a sister machine sat next to it all the various settings seem the same - Grr! Can't say I'm keen on Macs!!
speckytecky Posted December 11, 2014 Author Posted December 11, 2014 Bumpety, bumpety, bump! Reckon I posted the OP at a bad time of the day as so far no feedback - which is most unusual for Edugeek or else my question is completely numpty?
Sagima Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 Can you do a time machine backup of the working one and wipe and restore it to the one that doesn't work. Whatever setting is stopping it will be gone then. You'll be done in an hour with luck(although you'l never know why) 1
pooley Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 Are you binding on IP or server name? I find OSX doesn't play well with DNS and prefers IP addresses. Same with proxy config. Check time isn't skewed between client on OD master. 1
davidacland Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 When you say 'sister machine', do you mean a Mac or a PC? As a troubleshooting process I would look at the following: Network system preferences: does the network interface have an IP address and all other necessary settings? Can you ping the router address? Can you ping the DNS server address? Can you resolve any internal or external DNS records? To ping, open terminal from the Utilities folder and type: ping routeraddress (Replace with actual address) To do a DNS lookup open terminal and use: dig dnsname (Replace with actual DNS name). You should get an answer section specifying the result. Next I would look at the proxy setup (again in the network system preferences). Are these correct? Next I would check if any anti-virus or classroom management software (such as Impero) is causing the issue (uninstall them or re-install the Mac without them and retest). Next, have you got any kind of port security enabled on the switch that is preventing full network / Internet access? Finally, take the Mac and connect it to a "simple" unfiltered Internet connection, such as at home. This will tell you if it is the Mac or an external factor. I hope this is of some help. speckytecky Posted December 12, 2014 Author Posted December 12, 2014 Thanks @davidacland the iMac is now on the domain and bound to both the AD and mini mac server. The sister machine was an iMac sitting next to it and tracing through the settings there was one setting for the Mini Mac Server that hadn't been mirrord. The only issue remaining with it now is for the local set up profile and my own domain profile that I logged on with the flipping thing won't connect to th Internet. Any other staff or student log on is ok?
davidacland Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 Assuming you have a backup of any data in your local home folder, login as the local admin on the iMac, delete your home from /Users/yourusername, logout and log back in with your account. Just as a little disclaimer, this will delete any data you are storing in the local home folder. If it works fine, it was something in your home folder. If it fails again it will probably be a restriction on your AD account somewhere (possibly group membership, or just a corrupted / broken account). David Acland - Amsys
PCope Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Hi, this May or may not be related but we are experiencing an issue which we think might be to do with the impero client on our apple macs. We run 10.9 Mavericks across about 50 macs authenticating to AD and getting general apple settings via an Open Directory Mac Pro Server - profile manager. We are having serious occurrences of our all of our Apple Mac Clients not being able to connect to the internet. This has happened about 3 or 4 times recently but we have been trying to identify what is causing the problem. Here is a break down of facts that I know from when this happens: -This morning we lost internet connectivity on the macs. The Mac Server Logs and Health Status was fine. -I restarted the mac server and then the stations then the internet worked again fine. -This only affects our Mac clients, all Windows PC clients work fine. -When this happens, the mac clients can still access other network features such as SMB shares -All of our mac and windows clients connect straight to our LEA internet provider (South West Grid for Learning) with the addition of an onsite LightSpeed Rocket Filtering Server for monitoring traffic and blocking where necessary (LightSpeed is not acting as a proxy Server). -The Lightspeed Internet Filtering shows that during the time of the problem, sites had not reached it to be allowed or blocked etc. -Our teacher uses Lan View software on their teacher mac (Used for lesson control). This in its self can stop and enable internet access. I’ve tested this and it does not seem to be causing a problem as I got the teacher to test it when the macs were working again (Disable internet for stations and then Enable it again). We've used Lan School for a long time with no issues. Although this is now working again (for the moment), the impact that it has on our lessons is very high if they happen to be using the internet in the lesson. In addition, I had managed to get abit of time on one of the affected computers that had not been restarted. This computer had both Fire Fox as well as Safari and they both wouldn’t load any internet web pages, they just got stuck in a routine of looking for an internet connection with the blue bar going across the top of the browser but nothing happened. I know that on this machine, both browsers normally work. Due to administration restrictions I couldn’t see any network settings in Safari however when I went to Firefox it said that I was connecting through “system proxy settings” -(this isn't right since we don't use a proxy server). I changed this to No Proxy and also auto detect connection and this works fine. It looks like something (likely impero, is changing the setting for some reason). It's almost like something is forcing a change on the internet settings. Any thoughts or anyone with the same problem? Thanks, Adrian Richards Humphry Davy School 1
