New IP Addresses

Good morning all,

 

I am new to networking and currently finding my way around (software is my area).

 

The guy who deals with our network has been away due to family issues and we have had word that he will not be back till January sometime.

 

Here is the problem I am now facing and need help so sort it out.

 

The switch over would have been sorted out by the gentleman who is now away and I have now been asked to see to it.

 

Is this something straight forward or is it very complicated and if anyone will be able to point me in the right direction on how to move over to the new LGFL setting that would be very much appreciated.

 

Do I just change the DHCP scope on our current system and then connect to the new LGFL box? Totally lost here.

Have you got any more information, think you missed some out.

 

Document what you have to start with, if there isn't any documentation already.

 

Have you got anything set up on static IP's ? servers , etc.

I have started documenting what we have currently.

 

Yes we have servers, printers, wireless APs all with static IP which I have just finishing making a list of.

If you are talking about moving to LGFL 2.0 then Its not very complicated but it does take time. We did ours in the holidays a few summers ago. You need the list of all your static IPs.

Get your new scope from LGFL and select which addresses to exclude from DHCP

Printers will probably be your biggest headache depending on how many you have. Not only will you have to change the physical IP on them but also the IP registered for them on the print server.

change all other static IPs.

Change all your server addresses except for the DHCP server. Enable your scope and then change the DHCP server IP. Make sure you can connect to everything.

 

This may not be the best way but its how we did it and seems to work for us.

Yes moving to LGFL 2.0. Have listed the current static IPs and also selected which addresses excluding from DHCP.

 

Inset days this thursday and friday so hoping to use those days plus the weekend to make the change over.

 

Do I have to create the new scope on the DHCP server in addition to the current one and should I connected to the new router from LGFL when doing this? Sorry if questions are seem silly to be asking.

Create a new DHCP for your new IP Addresses, make sure to keep the old scope as well

I take it you are refering to London GFL? We did ours over a summer too, however the reconfig of printers ran into the term due to other issues.

 

I would inform staff what you are doing, as they wont be able to use a computer during this period, you want the network to yourself. If this cant happen then a replan is required.
