Thanks Edited November 18, 2014 by round2it
sted Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 i think youd need a 08r2 kms key as iirc you cant use a workstation key on a server or vice versa. just set up a windows 8.1 vm and use that for kms
Arthur Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 If you have EES, login to VLSC and lookup the KMS host key for Windows Server 2012 R2 DataCenter/Std. This will activate all server and client OSs inc. Windows 7 and 2008 R2. You'll also need to install KB2885698 on your 2008 R2 server if you use that for your KMS server.

teejay Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 You install the highest level key you are licensed for, so basically if you are licensed for Windows server through EES then stick in the key for the highest version you have (datacenter or standard), if not then stick the license key in for Windows 8.1 Enterprise. This will then mean all windows versions that are at or below the level of the key will activate, just makes life a lot easier as you wont have to keep changing the key and reactivating the keys if you install higher levels of Windows. 1
teejay Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 because server cant use a workstation key and vice vrsa Desktop Versions of Windows can use the server key. 1
Arthur Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 Why can I not use my windows 7 kms key KMS client keys are different from KMS host keys. 1

round2it Posted November 18, 2014 Author Posted November 18, 2014 because server cant use a workstation key and vice vrsa Was not trying to use workstation key on a server just wanted to add a win 7 kms key to the kms server so that it will activate my clients. The servers own key should not be in this equation. As the point of the kms server is to let you activate your products from a central point. Adding various keys for products that you require activating. Unless i am up my own a@@ tonight thats how i see kms working. I will shut up now talking about things i dont understand. Again thanks for they replys.

Again thanks for they replys. by using slmgr . . . you are attempting to use a windows 7 code to activate server2008r2 as far as im aware if your kms server is running 2008r2 the only "windows" ie not office kms key you can use is a server2008r2 one but that will activate win7 pcs. if you dont have a kms code for 2008r2 just vm a windows 8.1 enterprise feed that the appropriate kms code(s) (if you want office kms as well) and use that 1
round2it Posted November 18, 2014 Author Posted November 18, 2014 Do microsoft have meetings to come up with dumb ideas like this Thanks sted
SHimmer45 Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 btw if you have are at some point moving to new versions of windows, windows 8 / Server 2012 on 2008r2 KMS host you will need a patch and the same for 8.1 / 2012R2 1
round2it Posted November 19, 2014 Author Posted November 19, 2014 Yea got that one locked down thanks. Kms now counting activation requests just need to fire up 25 machines now. Thanks everyone.
Gillrhodes Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 Help! I've been struggling to get our new 2012 r2 server setup to be KMS server. I think it could be because it has a MAK key for server instead of KMS key maybe but my microsoft volume licencing site there is only a mak key for server 2012. I'm trying to activate office 2013 and have entered the office 2013 kms key in the volume activation tool installed on server and activated it. I know I need to have more than 25/30 clients but I want to check it is going to work first, and I don't think it is. I have tried running slmgr.vbs /dli on server to see the current KMS count and just get Windows operating system, 'Volume_mak channel Licence status: licenced' Any suggestions?
SHimmer45 Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 You need a KMS key for a KMS host to respond to activation requests. depending on your licensing you should have both KMS and MAK keys but it depends what licensing model/agreement you are using. you can use the mak key to activate clients if you added it to them.
sted Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 if you dont have a kms key for server create a windows 8.1 vm and use that as your kms server just give it a fixed ip 1
