Simcfc73 Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 Hi, I have an issue which is weird and causing me to pull what little hair I have left out. I want to get WIFI into our nursery room, its in the dungeons so just going to put an AP in one room and tell them this is where the wifi is. I have a Ruckus 7363 in there connected to a controller.. all is good. The issue arose when I tried to connect a wifi dongle to it and it saw it but wouldn't connect....but my W8 phone would and worked perfectly. A bit of trial and error with laptops, Hudl and chromecasters came to the conclusion that the 2.4Ghz is not working properly.....but if I remove it away from the walls it does... the signal is still strong when I wall mount it but it never connects on any device but take it off the wall and the devices connect. Not sure what to do... I probably need to force the 5ghz on the devices as that seems solid but as they see the 2.4 one also they try and connect to that.. and fail. I did have an issue with the netgear AP too which I thought was just that it was rubbish, I am starting to think the room is made by the same people who built the tower block in ghostbusters to bring Gozer through

We used to have one room that absolutely would not do wireless. I put it down to the construction of the room 'somehow'. How far away from the wall do you gave to move it away? Does it work on a different wall? Meldrew
Michael Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 I'd say there's a high probability there's a large metal structure or plate of some kind. Easiest thing to do is route the cable further and attach it to another wall or indeed the ceiling if appropriate.
Simcfc73 Posted November 14, 2014 Author Posted November 14, 2014 Might try the ceiling, tried 2 walls as I thought the second one was okay and cut the cable that length. Biggest issue is the chromecast then as I don't want to run a long HDMI mount it near the AP
IrritableTech Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 If you reduce the power down does it improve the situation?
bald_pig Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 You could try getting your hands on a cable/stud finder, and giving the walls a swoosh, might find theres a load of cabling or pipework running through the wall! Plan B is to coat the wall in tinfoil
andydis Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 sounds strange but trying using the AP's at floor level and see if that fixes the problem. I have seen steels in buildings act like a faraday cage and the wireless "mushroom" signal gets disrupted.
Simcfc73 Posted November 14, 2014 Author Posted November 14, 2014 Please move to 'I am a numpty' forum Thought I would try fixing the channel on the APs.... channel 1 failed like before but channel 6 sprang to life. There are a couple of BT wifi signals closeby which was messing things up. I guess me thinking the Ruckus stuff was clever made me ignore the basics. Now if the BT stuff channel hops I will be stuffed.
TechSupp Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 If you see my other thread we had simikar issues and the autoscan for best channel did not work correctly so ended up fixing the channels on each AP due to the issue you have, overcrowding in same channel from local BT home hubs etc. Switching channel fixed ours except I everyone is on 1, 6 and 11. Did ask question could I use channels inbetween the standards without problens and how many channels to leave between adjacent AP's of ours.
