Managing anything with profile manager???

Hi,

 

I want to be able to manager our entire suite of iPads/macbooks/imacs with profile manager.

 

Around 100 devices.

 

My only issues seems to be enrolling them correctly, as it wants to apply enrolment and settings based on the user and not the machine, as none of these are personal devices, managing settings and apps based on who has enrolled it seems pretty useless.

 

Also it seems as one user you an only enrol one macbook for example as when you login to enroll the 2nd macbook, it removes the first enrolment.

 

The only way i can think of doing this is to create user accounts for each device and then group them, so users, ipad1, ipad2, macbook1, macbook 2 etc

 

After searching i can't seem to find a lot on how to get these setup for a multi-user environment.

 

Also if anyone could share with me, how you correctly deploy apps using profile manager and VPP

Have you added the devices to a device group?

Are the users in open directory or active directory or something else.

Profile manager can push out 'managed apps' from Apple's VPP scheme but the devices need to be assigned to a user and that user's iTunes account will need to be enrolled in your VPP scheme.

If you are using 'redeemable codes' you will need to redeem the code on the iOS devices directly.

For enrolling macbooks, iMacs etc. just create an enrolment profile in profile manager and download it to the machine - you don't have to enroll it by clicking the enroll button on profile manager.

 

To apply policies on a 'per device' basis, you need to add them to a device group, then apply the settings you want to this device group.

 

You also can't deploy Apps to a device group however, you can only deploy them to users because the VPP relies on the user having an Apple ID and being signed into the App Store in order for app distribution to actually work.

 

If you're setting them up in a multi-user environment I would look at only using profile manager for the macbooks/iMacs and using the iPhone Configuration Utility to configure the iPads in bulk as profile manager doesn't really work for them unless you're in a 1-1 environment.
