Flashed last night on a 2012 nexus 7, went fine.

 

flashed mine this morning (only had it a week so the wipe wasn't much of an issue).

 

Great so far, with the exception of the Comixology app breaking :(

Most of the big app developers dont take long to update their apps but it does get frustrating if you jump on OS updates quickly. I will be doing my Nexus 7 2012 tonight.

I side loaded the OTA on my nexus 4 last night without any issues, however I don't seem to have wifi working properly on the school wifi infrastructure, apparently there's some wifi bug.

Got the OTA update for my Nexus 4 last night :D

 

Took about 45min - 1hr to install, as it goes through all your apps and optimises them - I assume it's compiling them with ART. It needs 500mb free to install, and after it was done I had about 300mb less free space than before.

 

Thoughts:

  • Good Lord it's beautiful. Material design is gorgeous, the new font is very slick, and the animation is smooth and fluid. Even little things like unlocking or turning an alarm off look wonderful.
  • It may be only the animations, but it does feel faster, more responsive. The Nexus 4 isn't a new phone, but it feels as fast as anything.
  • The new notifications drawer is brilliant - swiping down to expose settings is much easier than swapping the pane with the button top right. It's more useful as well - it has a flashlight, rotation lock, brightness, shows you your exact battery as a %
  • It finally incorporates a lot of features that I've needed apps for in the past - adaptive brightness (Lux), battery % and power saving switches in the notifications (Battery Widget Reborn), notifications on the lock screen (DashClock). I've actually disabled the first two for now as their notifications look so ugly, although Lux does still have better control over the brightness - I can't get it as dark as I like with the system slider.
  • New Task Switcher is nicer to look at and more useful, particularly the way it shows each settings screen separately. Might get to be a bit overwhelming with too many Chrome tabs, though I don't often have that many open on my phone.
  • GMail being the email app for everything is a PITA though - I now can't tell with a glance at the icons if an email is personal or work, and the widgets are no longer differently coloured.
  • There's no silent mode! As in, I can't actually silence my phone. I can get it down to vibrate; the closest I can get to silent is to turn notifications off (which also disables alarms, stupidly), or set them to priority so they're filtered. I don't want to do either of those things! I want to be notified of everything, but in a silent way, so that when I come out of a classroom I can glance at my phone and see if there are any emails without having to come out of some daft notification state to check. Hopefully just a bug, because if it's design, it's stupid stupid stupid.
  • Battery life: don't know yet...

You can silent your phone by choosing "None" or "Priority" when pressing the volume button. But None truly does mean none and Priority means pretty much alarms and anything else you allow (like stared contacts etc) Anything else has to be refreshed once you turn off priority before you get notifications (apparently, I've not tested yet).

 

It is very nice looking, but I'm not completely sold on it yet.

Also Avast is complaining about one of the new system apps having a trojan.

Apparently you're not alone in thinking the 2012 N7 felt slower: Lollipop on the 2012 Nexus 7: Not great, but not much worse | Ars Technica

 

FWIW, my N4 actually feels snappier, though that may be purely subjective and due to swishy animations.

 

Battery life seems to be holding up so far. Experimentation shows that priority mode is actually silent mode - when it says "no notifications", it just seems to mean "I won't make a noise unless it's a priority". There's still a notification in the drawer and apps don't stop checking in.

I'm finding it generally quicker, but then mine has always been a dog anyway :(

Android v5.0.1 has been released for certain Nexus devices.

The update is also supposed to fix a variety of issues with the initial 5.0 builds, but in the absence of factory images or OTAs (for now), all we can do is wait for the push to complete and look around for any goodies.

 

Update: It looks like some factory images have already hit as well. So far, the Nexus 9 (WiFi), Nexus 7 2013 (WiFi), and Nexus 10 images can be grabbed from Google's download page

Rolled my N7 (2012) back to 4.4.4 last week as Lollipop was just too much for it. Absoluteley worty it tho, it's like having a new device again even if Gooles instructions have some fairly large gaps.

Mate, Lollipop has ruined my gorgeous Nexus 4. Battery will drain in 10 hours even if you don't touch it now. Heaven forbid you're using it as you'll be lucky to get 3-4 hours. Absolutely hate the aggregation of my work email into Gmail; the app is good for nothing now. It all looks cleaner and is now working quickly, but I want to chuck it straight at a wall with this battery life. Because I like my 8 hours of beauty kip, I have no option but to charge it through the night now or else it will drain. I cannot get used to how internet pages in chrome are now put into your task switcher either. All in all I feel this software update has ruined a perfectly good phone, so I'll be rolling it back. Forget silent mode, I cannot find an option for that and the flaming thing started vibrating away in a meeting.

Sounds like you got problems, son, my battery life is fine*. You can turn the new Chrome behaviour off in Chrome (Merge tabs and apps), and it turns out that "Priority" is basically "Silent", with some settings you can tweak so certain people's phone calls will override it.

 

GMail being the app for all email is a bit of a pain, as the notification logo is the same; but the lock screen will tell me what email is where, I've got two separate widgets for each mailbox as I had before, and I managed to kludge Light Flow Lite so that I still have two separate colours on my notification LED.

 

Might be worth doing a factory reset from 5.0 to see if that works better than OTA, someone had a thread on here the other day about how it made a big difference to their N5.

 

*If you havin' phone problems I feel bad for you son, I got Lollipop 5 and my phone is plum**

Downright inconvenient. When I check the battery usage the main culprit appears to be "exchange services".

 

Try deleting & re-adding your work account, had this happen to me a year or so ago and it was like having a pop tart in my pocket, it was running so hot.
