andypandy Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 We are currently considering moving from Bromcom back to SIMS, anyone here done it?
vikpaw Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 I know that there have been a couple of schools that went that way and then had to come back. Whether they'll admit to it is a different thing altogether.
glen_j Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 we moved from Bromcom to Sims about 7 years ago, we use the lesson monitor module for registers.
andypandy Posted November 12, 2014 Author Posted November 12, 2014 I was hoping to find someone with a more recent experience, to try and understand the potential problems before I experience them. My main concern is the data transfer process, specifically what data is likely to not be transferred or will be done badly. Why did you decide to switch?
matt40k Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 Sure your not thinking of WinFolder or the grey pads rather then the full MIS solution @glen_j @andypandy - Pretty sure Capita should provide you with a nice list of what can and can't be migrated - they go into legal mode when it comes to data migration so ensure everything you want is listed as will migrate.

Yeah sorry it was the grey pads, used for registration only.
vikpaw Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 Attendance data should be easy to pull in. I presumed you meant you are using their MIS solution in which case it could get very hairy as to what will be accepted for import.
manc_techie Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 Speaking from experience where the MIS Manager and SLT decided on this with no input from IT it is a huge step backwards. SLG is hated by our teaching staff, we've had issues when SIMS is updated via Solus and the support compared to Bromcom hasn't been too great. Even the MIS Manager is now saying it was a mistake.
spc-rocket Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 I am surprised that you're considering this, you must have reasons I suppose but usually its normal to see SIMS --> some other MIS migrations. Be prepared to know what you let yourself in for when going to sims (I'm not talking about the migration of data). We found that sims.net actually restricted us in many ways and moved to Bromcom MIS about 18 months ago - loads better and better upgrades and support. Ash. 1
GREED Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 Currently, each MIS provider has their own method for migrating the data, there is no standard and so it is very hit and miss. I have seen that SIMS uses mostly the CTF file and a base for the data migration (and we all know how limited that is), plus a number of reports in a certain format. I think your biggest battle will not be on the common things like attendance, core student data or staff details, but on the key sundries like behaviour records, markbooks, SEN, exams results (although you can import those again from exams results files), and biggest of all: Historical information.
Griff Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 (edited) Sorry mate I misread your post bromcom back to sims great idea thought you were considering going to bromcom Edited November 25, 2014 by Griff

Redwinegirl Posted October 6, 2015 Posted October 6, 2015 Hi Why were/have you moved away from BromCom? @andypandy We are looking at possibly moving to BromCom so could do with knowing any pitfalls we may encounter? Thanks!
andypandy Posted October 6, 2015 Author Posted October 6, 2015 We didn't move away in the end, SLT decided it wasn't worth the cost. As with any system, there are upsides and downsides, PM me if you want a discussion about it.
charlesstones Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 Hi all, I am trying to find the API for bromcom in order to get a scanning solution, the same as NSI scanning into SIMS. Does anyone have the API for this?
charlesstones Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 Yes, but because I work for a 3rd party they might not give it out. Still waiting, hopefully they will let me have this. Thanks anyway.
GREED Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 Surely you then need to be a partner and pay up? Like we all do?
Bromcom-PR Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 Hi all, I am trying to find the API for bromcom in order to get a scanning solution, the same as NSI scanning into SIMS. Does anyone have the API for this? Please see a new thread under "Bromcom APIs".
GREED Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 It would appear the thread has been deleted Ali
GREED Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 My apologies genuinely did not see that. Withdraw previous comment. 2
