Which Software?

Which software would you use to write a BATCH script or an HTML document?

Notepad? Notepad++?

 

Or are there any really useful (free) alternatives?

Notepad ++ is really good without being overly complicated and is all I now use for editing HTML.

I see some people use Eclipse with a Shell plugin - not sure which download to go with on the Eclipse site though!

Yeah.. I find the Eclipse downloads page a bit overwhelming too. If you want to use Eclipse it shouldn't really matter which download you go with as you can just install any additional plugins you need within eclipse by going to Help > Install new Software. Just type the url of the repository you want to install from and select the required components. Maybe start with the PHP download bundle as you mentioned editing HTML.

I tend to use either Notepad2-mod or Sublime Text. The latter in particular has lots of nifty features like multiple cursors and selections.

If you're hardcore, then Notepad++.

 

If you like pretty, minimal awesome things then Sublime Text 3.

 

The amount of features in Sublime Text 3, I can't recommend it enough.

Notepad++ for me. Nice syntax highlighting, easy to use and plenty of plugins for when you need extra functionality.
