School Notebooks for student - Working from home restrictions - Advice

Hi Everyone

 

I have been asked to give out 10 laptops to students for them to work from home to do homework etc.

 

My question is how can we control what they are able to go on while at home? we obviously do not want them viewing inappropriate material or staying up until 1 o'clock playing games!

 

We are creating a policy to go with this regarding damages, maintainance and outlineing what can and cannot be done on the notebooks but im curious as to how we can enforce these when they are at home and it would be good to have these questions answered before I go to SLT with these concerns.

Do you have something like securus for monitoring , maybe use that for policing activity or make your proxy public facing and force all traffic through it? We had a student requiring a laptop for home, ended up the Mother using it for looking at holidays, and the child using it for looking at porn and it came back covered in stains , i kid you not! Could you create local GP's on each laptop to lock them down (standalone laptop but means they cant break anything). As for monitoring what their doing - surely thats their parents job if they are at home?

 

EDIT: BTW I hate things like this as you have a level of responsibility but most of your tools are taken away. Make sure you get a good tight letter that they sign accepting responsibility for loss, damage and use!

Who is "we"? Not the IT team in this instance. You can only offer the best solution you can which is IMHO the local policy option - explain the pros and cons and send it to SLT with your created policy (also not your remit, really)

SLT have already agreed to give students the notebooks but it is up to me to create the policy, then SLT will review and sign it off before we get the parents/carers to sign and agree to the policy. The school is a Special Ed school for students with social, behaviour and emotional issues and parents/carers have difficulties with enforcing restrictions. I agree that it isn't in my remit to ensure they don't stay on it all night but it is in my remit to ensure the notebooks are not used inappropriately or report that they are not being used appropriately.

 

local policy does seem to be the best option to enforce some restrictions on the notebooks.
