Your players character starts as an over powered god but throughout the game you get weaker and weaker

This was almost done in the first Xbox Ninja Gaiden.

Ryu was from the start the most powerful character in the game (so long as you knew how to use him properly), but they upped the dificulty level by a ridiculous amount after each boss, meaning that it felt like you were less and less able to defeat your opponents. Bloomin' good game too :)

You have 10 seconds to think of a game mechanic that has never been done...go!

  • Fully open world with fun in-depth character-action style combat. "Game Over" if you do anything.

  • Combat it just dance-evasion. Only options for damage are friendly-fire.

  • Story changes depending on what secrets you find. [i've been trying to get good at gamedev to actually do this. I love the concept.]

There's 3.

Deus Ex Human Revolution does number 3, the more you decide and find, the more it changes the outcome (a friend and I ran through a game, by decision 3 it was so different we could not get the same outcome. It has something like 70 different endings depending on how you play the game (if I remember rightly).

*edit*

I lied, it has 70 different story lines, but only 5 different endings.

I've been playing enough retro games from the 80's recently to know that's been done before, is extremely frustrating, and we should never go back there. Hitman (pre-Absolution) had the best game save/check point mechanic of any game I've ever seen.

Oh, cool. I never played DE:HR. Not a big fan of first-person.

I'd love to see skill upgrades being more damage stability than damage output. Take the whole concept of learning your skills to the next level.

I was really hoping Remember Me was going to be like that - able to remix memories into multiple different storylines. Alas, t'was not to be.

I always forget about that game... it's not that memorable. :p

DE:HR's ending was rubbish - it was literally "press the button for the ending you want!" You didn't necessarily have all the buttons available unless you'd done certain tasks, but it was incredibly inelegant. They'd obviously run out of time to implement it properly.

STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl strikes me as closer to the ideal. SPOILERS but it is like 7 years old, c'mon.

There was a set of false endings, that most people got, where you reach the heart of the zone and have your wish granted. That wish depends on how you've played the game - I had a load of credits, so I got squashed by riches, there are four others depending on various outcomes from earlier on.

But the real ending required you to follow a seemingly optional chain of quests from early on in the game, gaining you access to another room near the end that leads you on to uncover the real secrets of the zone. And it's quite a list of quests you have to follow, hoping that no-one has been killed by AI dogs along the way.

More here. Brilliant stuff, that game.

For a multi-story ending you can't beat Escape Velocity Nova. It's the 2d Elite in terms of what you have to do (start ot with a shuttle and 100 credits and a whole host of star systems to explore.

But as you progress you can get onto one of six different story paths, once on that path you can't go do any other major storyline, and your actions will change the state of power in the galaxy permenantly.

Excellent for replayability, and all the little stories are really well written.

Definitely worht a pop :)

Similarly.. There was once a really rubbish online 'game' called Forumwarz that played you as a troll, 'damaging' forum integrity by disrupting threads.

I still want my procedurally-generated non-euclidean space FPS though :(
