Such a meh article. It's not mentioned but you can easily see he assumes that desktops PC's only have Windows. Desktop PC's also have OSX and other *nix based operating systems too. Yes the latter is more of a niche for home/office desktops but OSX isn't.

Yes desktop PC's are changing, they're not in trouble; that's utterly ridiculous. If human beings have any sense, "home computers" (let's use a better term for this now) will continue just as strongly and they will do what they should have been doing from the off - replacing all the other devices that have not been necessary for years. Set top boxes, "Tivo" devices, games consoles, audio/video/media players etc.

Its not that the PC is dying, just the reasons for needing one are becoming less. Already got one non teaching member of staff fully iPad now. Uploaded all his Word, Excel files to OneDrive and he just lives on that, uses OneNote in meetings, can print from it, get on the web, email, he loves it. Yet 12 months ago he had an Acer Windows laptop and that was it.

The PC is dying? Tablets have gutted the desktop market? That's funny, I'm sure I'd heard very much the opposite recently... oh wait, I did. Tablet sales have flattened and PC sales are picking up again.

Search results to not indicate a successful operating system I search more for things that are giving me problems than things I plan to buy.

 

Seems to assume Windows 10 will only be used on desktop PCs.

Says apple Macs are gaining sales. Joke right? There are more XP machines than Macs, give it 20 years and they may manage to overtake windows. Macs are PCs not smartphones if win10 is great why would anyone buy a mac.

Apple in its last quarter sold 5.5 Million Macs thats more than in any quarter EVER before (same quarter the year before was 4.5 Million, so 1 million Macs up). The Mac has been gaining market share slowly over the last few years. In a world of over 1.5 Billion PC's it takes a lot to move just 1%. If you look at gstatcounter, the Mac has over 9% Desktop OS market share now.

 

So yeah, its not a joke the Mac is sky rocketing in sales. Everyone i know who has recently bought a new laptop/desktop computer has not bought one running Windows. They have got a Mac.

I didn't calculate that or anything but for instance here

Windows XP market share FELL OFF A CLIFF in October • The Register

 

Shows there are something like 5 times more XP machines in use than there are Mac OS and the register says XP just fell of a cliff.

 

I could be reading this all wrong.
