Search Improvement

I feel the biggest improvement to Edugeek would be an improved Search Engine.

 

The current offering is quite frankly, appalling.

 

There are far too many results often having seemingly nothing to do with what you searched for.

 

It's been like this as long as I can remember, I keep thinking it will have changed one week but alas dissapointment, frustration and a great feeling of ineptness ensues whenever I think 'I wonder if this has been asked before' and I try find out.

 

So Admins, are there any plans for the introduction of an improved search facility?

Are you using the "Search for all terms" option when you search?

Nope, I use the default which includes 'use query as entered' but it still seems to return things that include any of the words.

google has most of the un-passworded site indexed rather well, try

site:[url]www.edugeek.net[/url] searchphrase

It's usually the forums I want to search, will it do that?

 

I'm sure last time this was mentioned quite a few people were of the same opinion as me.

Here's an example, using the default options, which should return less results when searching for more words correct?

reason being there will be more instances of 'search' than 'search edugeek'.

 

Search for 'search' and returns around 1700 results

Search for 'search edugeek' returns around 3000 results.

 

If I search part of my other frequent forum (seatcupra.net) for:

 

'brake' I get over 500 results

'rear brake' returns ~340 results.

 

That's the way it should work.

It seems to work fine when you click on the button that says "Search for all terms", otherwise if you search for example search edugeek its looking for the keywords search and edugeek they dont both have to be in the same page.

Might it be worth having one of those 'Powered by Google' search boxes?

Yes, we know that the search engine for the forums section sucks ... we are down to suggesting that you take the option that most people do with the Becta site and use Google.

 

We are improving it but it does take time to do a complete rebuild and ZeroHour and his team are working hard. The other important change is that the search will take in *all* areas of the site, not separate searches for the forums and everything else.

 

We will try to keep everyone informed, but please be patient.

I was just wanting to mention it more than anything, there didn't seem to be anything similar in the Comments and Suggestions area.

I used to finfd the search facility ok, I could find stuff - since recent changes tho it's useless

 

Difference seems to be with 'search all terms' - it just doesn't anymore
