[ms office - 2007] Numbering List causes a space after number 10

Basically I have pupils who are making a list of steps to make a cake

 

and they are using numbering list to do this but once I get to number '10' the text starts at least 4 spaces forward and when I try to delete the spaces it deletes the actual number 10

 

I have attached a screen shot to show you Please help its really annoying!

It looks as though you're using 'tab' to separate content from list number - is that correct?

 

If so, use Word's built in numbered list, it'll format correctly then.
