sparkeh Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 (edited) Ok so I have gone round in circles with this and need someone to slap some sense into me help me. Basically, I want some kind of solution to recording live tv and streaming it to our TV. It used to be simple: Freeview aerial -> laptop with Windows Media Center -> TV via HDMI; but things have changed in that during some building work to rejig our downstairs layout we moved the TV far away from the aerial (this didn't bother us at the time as we mostly watched on demand stuff via our Roku). But now the missus has decided she wants to start watching and recording live TV again but not have wires trailing around the house (and apparently this is possible as I am "a computer man"). I have the following things available: Laptop with Win 8.1 Pro Freeview tuner dongle Roku Chromecast Raspberry Pi Some options I have considered Waiting for Simple.TV to be released over here (Ideal! But the release date seems to be pushed back again and again) Running something like MediaPortal on the laptop and using ChromeCast desktop mirroring (not sure if this will work very well though things like iPlayer stream very well with desktop mirroring) Somehow using the Raspberry Pi (not thought that one through too much) Anyway, anyone got any bright ideas? tmcd35 Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 Does Windows Media Center do DLNA streaming? Get the the USB dongle to record into a folder being monitored by a DLNA server. Install an app from the channel store for DLNA on the Roku and stream.

Fair do's. We've got cables running under carpet and whatnot, but I understand it's not always possible. Is the TV against an internal wall?
jaminben Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 MediaPortal as a backend TVServer and XBMC as your frontend... I'd stay clear of Myth TV, buts that just a bad personal experience. I'm running a headless server with 4 clients of various sorts running XBMC... 800+ movies and 1200+ tv shows archived... works quite well. 1

Is the TV against an internal wall? Yeah against internal wall and hardwood floors so can't really run cables under it Location was perfect when all we used was the Roku but now its a PITA.
